Community Tisha B’Av Observance – Aug 11th

Tisha B’Av (the fast day that is on the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av) is a period of fasting, lamentation and prayer to remember the destruction of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem and other major disasters and tragedies that Jewish people experienced throughout history.

Saturday, August 10 at Congregation Beth Shalom

In observance of Tisha B’Av, a community-wide observance and service will take place on , at Congregation Beth Shalom, 14200 Lamar Avenue, Overland Park. The evening begins at 9:45 p.m. with a Tisha B’Av MA’ARIV service and will be followed by a D’var Torah and reading of Eicha.

This is a meaningful service with beautiful, mournful melodies, some engaging teaching, and a time for communal reflection on both painful times of our past and hope for our future. Participating in this observance are Rabbis David Glickman, Rabbi Beryl Padorr, Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick and Hazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda. Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick is the rabbinic coordinator for the community Tisha B’Av observances.

Sunday, August 11 at Kehilath Israel Synagogue

The community Tisha B’Av observance will continue on Sunday, August 11 at Kehilath Israel Synagogue. The movie, “The Long Way Home” will be shown at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by a panel discussion with rabbis. A Mincha service will begin at 8pm led by Rabbi Moshe Grussgott, a ten minute Torah lesson from Rabbi Grussgott, and ending with a Maariv service. Conclusion of fast will take place at 8:51pm and will be followed by a light break fast.

The film examines post-World War II Europe from 1945 to 1948 and the struggle of tens of thousands of displaced Jewish refugees in the aftermath of the Holocaust. The Long Way Home includes interviews with Holocaust survivors, newsreel footage, and readings of letters, journals, and news reports, to tell the story of the hardships faced by those freed from concentration camps in 1945. The movie is narrated by Morgan Freeman. Martin Landau, Edward Asner (KC native), Helen Slater, David Paymer, and Michael York contribute readings to the soundtrack.
