Community Selichot Program/Service, Saturday, August 28th
August 28, 2021
Following Havdalah and a virtual keynote presentation by Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin, “Looking for God in all the Right Places” a beautiful and moving Selichot service took place Saturday evening at host congregation, Beth Torah with multi-access participation. The service was led by area clergy and a musical leadership team of soloists from congregations across the community. The Selichot service helped worshipers begin to spiritually prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The late hour and the themes articulated in the liturgy prepared attendees for the Days of Awe and set the tone for the High Holy Days.

The month of Elul, prior to the beginning of Rosh Hashanah and the High Holy Day season is a time for soul-searching and reflection as we prepare oneself for the Days of Awe. It is during this time that we observe Selichot which translates as “forgiveness” on the Saturday evening before Rosh Hashanah.
At 9:00 p.m. Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin will be the keynote speaker for the program prior to the Selichot service which begins at 10:10. Through readings, meditations and beautiful music focusing on the themes of our fall holiday season, we reflect on the past year and how we will affect teshuvah for ourselves in the year to come. Be part of this transition as we change Torah covers and prepare our souls to welcome 5782. Funding for this program provided by the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City. Details and registration information coming soon.

Rabbi Salkin has appeared on many television and radio programs, has spoken in more than a hundred communities and is the author of numerous books and publications. He currently serves as the Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel of West Palm Beach, Florida. “Looking for God in all the Right Places” will be the topic of Rabbi Salkin’s engaging presentation.
The Selichot service begins at 10:10 p.m. and is designed to help worshipers begin to spiritually prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The service will be led by area clergy and musicians.
Selichot is a Hebrew word meaning “forgiveness” and refers to the special prayers recited by Jews during the High Holy Day season. Selichot is an opportunity to enter into the High Holy Day Season truly attuned to the need for repentance and new beginnings. It gives us an opportunity to reaffirm our unity, even in the face of our differences, and face the challenges of a New Year together. Some of the prayers and music found in the Selichot service are taken from the High Holy Day liturgy, thus providing a musical transition between the “old year” and the New Year.
Visit www.kcrabbi.org the end of July for more information about the program and how to register. Contact Annette Fish, Rabbinical Association Administrator, afprogram@aol.com or 913-327-8226.
