Government Shutdown Emergency Assistance Fund Jewish Voices United

The federal government shutdown is affecting many of our friends and neighbors in the Kansas City metro area. Uncertainty over the length of the furlough is causing anxiety and stress for government employees who are not receiving pay, as well as those who rely on government assistance for basic needs.

To help with this developing situation, local Jewish organizations are coming together under the banner of Jewish Voices United to collect emergency funds. The funds will be used to assist food recipients of Jewish Family Services and Jewish Vocational Service who are affected by the government shutdown. All donations will be collected by the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City.

The goal: to raise $35,000 to provide much-needed food assistance during the shutdown.* 100% of your donation will go directly to individuals and families in the form of gift cards, redeemable at area grocery stores to help address the threat of food insecurity during the shutdown.

Federal workers have not been paid for almost a month, making it increasingly difficult for them to meet their financial obligations. At the same time, more than 700 families served by JFS and JVS rely on federal SNAP (food stamp) benefits to make ends meet. While these families have received their January and February government assistance, early payment of funds has created concerns that they will run out of food by mid-February. It is unclear whether they will receive March SNAP benefits.

The Government Shutdown Emergency Assistance Fund is in partnership with these Jewish Voices United Members: Avodah, Congregation Beth Torah, Congregation Kol Ami, Congregation Ohev Sholom, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, The Jewish Community Center-The J, Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Community Relations Bureau|AJC, Jewish Family Services, Jewish Federation, Jewish Vocational Service, and TribeKC.

This fundraising effort is also in partnership with: Congregation BIAV, Kehilath Israel Synagogue, Temple Sinai, and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah.

*Any unused funds (once the government shutdown ends) will be donated to the Chesed Fund, which provides financial assistance for those facing crisis situations, and those in chronic need.
